Shōgun is FX’s thrilling historical drama that takes us to Feudal Japan in the Sengoku era [1467-1615] A tumultuous era in Japanese history where Japan saw frequent conflicts among the daimyos who competed against each other for power and territories. A complex web of coalitions, shaky loyalties, rivalries and vicious betrayals drove these conflicts to dangerous heights and in turn made the political climate of Japan very tumultuous and highly unpredictable. This hit mini-series is highly faithful to the best-selling novel “Shōgun” by James Clavell.

Shōgun has taken the world by storm, garnering a whopping 9 million views globally within the first 6 days of its launch, the critically acclaimed series has received a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and 99% of the 114 critics have given this series positive review with an average of 8.6 out of 10, it has also received 99% audience score with 250 reviews and it has also received 85 out of 100 based on 39 critics on Metacritic. Variety’s Allison Herman called Shōgun a “thrilling transportive event on TV.” It has also received high praise universally, especially from Japan, for its cinematic quality and authentic representation of Japanese culture and its perfect blend of action, violence, and romance. Also, one of the major aspects it has received praise for is opting for subtitles instead of dubbing the entire show in English.

The series' commitment to historical accuracy and attention to detail is evident in the meticulous production design, which includes authentic props, authentic costumes, and sets, these elements make the viewers teleport into the Sengoku era Feudal Japan and give us a glimpse of what the everyday life was, and how dangerous and highly volatile the political climate was in Japan.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Toranaga

We follow three characters whose fates are intertwined with each other as they navigate the start of a civil war. One of the most prominent characters in Shōgun is Lord Yoshi Toranaga [played by Hiroyuki Sanada], a very powerful, cunning, and intelligent Bushō and the ruler of Kantō. The series begins with Toranaga backed in a corner, playing as one of the five members of The Council of Regents who were placed by the deceased ruler, who all together managed Japan until the heir turns of age. He fights the devious colleges who have banded up together against him and are attempting to depose him.

photo of Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne

John Blackthorne [played by Cosmo Jarvis), is a brash English pirate and a shipwreck survivor who lands on the shores of Japan. Blackthorne finds himself like a fish out of water. The complex political climate quickly overshadowed the ambitions that drove him, and his unexpected arrival disrupts carefully laid-out plans as he tries to further his own goals. And he ends up becoming a pawn in Toranaga's power game.

Anna Sawai as Lady Mariko Todo

Lady Mariko Todo [played by Anna Sawai] is a loyal vassal of Lord Toranaga and she is appointed as the translator for Blackthorne. The dynamic between Blackthorne and Lady Mariko is one of the central themes of the series. Both come from very different backgrounds, with Lady Mariko being a Japanese woman who is trapped in an abusive marriage and is a vassal of her lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne being an Englishman. Their dynamic transforms from reluctant tolerance and cultural clashes, then to respect with fleeting moments of forbidden love. Their chemistry together is palpable on screen. It is tense yet affectionate, electric yet contentious. She is driven by her quest for vengeance, which ends up making her a keystone of the series’ biggest conflict.

The Council of Regents, headed by Ishido Kazunari [played by Takehiro Hira], saw Toranaga as his biggest threat in the bid to become Shōgun, so he aligned himself with Ochiba no kata [played by Fumi Nikaidō], the heir’s mother, to get Toranaga impeached and killed. Ishido’s grand ambitions make the Regent a formidable and cunning adversary. His hunger for power makes him very ruthless. He is willing to do anything to protect his power and achieve his goals; even if it meant to bend or breaking the rules and resorting to violence. Lady Ochiba, on the other hand, is a master manipulator who uses her influence and cunning to manipulate not only Ishido but The Council of Regents as well, making them her puppets and furthering her own agenda.

Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige

I would also like to mention the other performance that I thoroughly liked was Kashigi Yabushige [played by Tadanobu Asano], a cunning and unscrupulous warlord who serves Lord Toranaga. He is ready to change his allegiance whenever it suits him the best. He also brings much-needed humour to the otherwise sombre tone of the series. His interactions with Blackthorne are very funny, especially when Blackthorne accidentally insulted Yabushige’s favourite food.

Shōgun is a must-see series available on Disney+ and Hulu that will leave viewers with bated breath. Its gripping plot keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with its masterful blend of action, romance, violence, political intrigue and complex character arcs. The captivating performance of the cast makes the viewers deeply invested in the characters, adding emotional depth and resonance to the show. Overall, Shōgun is a well-crafted and engaging historical drama and I highly recommend you to watch it. I would give this show a 10/10.
